New standard to help businesses invest in safe water projects

Our work on the award winning LifeStraw Carbon for Water and Treadle Pumps projects is well known, but an article published today on Sustain, highlights another innovative partnership we have developed with the Co-operative and Aqua Clara International. The resulting project will provide safe water to communities within the Co-operative’s Fairtrade Tea supply chain, helping the Co-operative meet environmental, community and business goals.

We continue to drive thinking about the development of new funding models for water projects and are expert partners in a group of more than 30 corporate, government, academic and NGO partners including Carlsberg, Munich Re, World Vision and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies who have come together to contribute to the development of a new Water Benefit Standard initiated by First Climate, the Swiss Agency for Development & Co-operation and The Gold Standard Foundation.

This new Water Benefits Standard has been launched today. Certified projects receive Water Benefit Certificates, which represent a specific volume of water that has been sustainably supplied, purified or conserved. These certificates are then sold to those with an interest in good water management, providing revenue to sustain the project activity year after year.
