Clean cooking in China
This project enables low-income families in Shanxi Province to replace conventional, fossil-fuel burning cookstoves with subsidised ‘semi-gasifiers’ – efficient heating and cooking stoves that use leftover organic matter from crop harvesting such as corn cobs.
With many local farmers growing corn, corn cobs are free, widely available, and would otherwise go to waste. By eliminating the need to buy coal, families can save up to 10% of household income, and lower their exposure to smoky fumes, thereby reducing the risk of respiratory illnesses. The project has already benefitted over 500,000 people, and has an average reduction rate of around 400,000 tonnes of CO2annually.

“I was one of the first people to get a Jinqilin stove four years ago. Through a government subsidy programme, I was able to buy it for a good price. Before the stove, we would throw away our corn cobs. We had no use for them, so we burned them in the fields to get rid of them. Now we save our corn cobs and use them for fuel in our Jinqilin stove. It is so fast and easy to use, much better than our old coal stove. But what I like most about the stove, besides the convenience, is that since buying the stove I’ve saved so much money from not having to buy coal for cooking. It is wonderful, every home in Shanxi should have one.”
