Orb: Solar in India
Orb Energy brings affordable, reliable solar-powered electricity and hot water heating to communities across India. Many households and businesses use electricity from the grid, which is largely powered by coal, and struggles to cope with country’s increasing demand for energy.
This project makes solar technology more widely available in rural and semi-urban areas, with 100 locally employed technicians encouraging more people to purchase solar panels or solar thermal water heating systems. 60,000 solar units are now providing safe, reliable power to houses and businesses across India, and households are saving more than 50% on electricity bills, while gaining access to clean, reliable power and avoiding blackouts. The project reduces 55,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
- Three household visits in the first year of installation reduce maintenance down the line
- Highly-skilled engineering jobs are created in Orb’s factories and installation networks
- Wide branch network throughout India means coverage for many locations

Mrs Komala’s daughter was finding it very difficult to study using the kerosene lamp in their home due to the smoke it gave off and the poor amount of light it produced.
After installing Orb’s solar lighting system, Mrs Komala was happy to see her daughter studying without issue and could more easily attend her customers in their attached shop as well.
What the carbon finance delivers
Carbon finance allows dedicated peer-to-peer marketing and supports a branch network across India. It also helps households afford the system by providing financing options. Without carbon finance, Orb Energy could not offer three free preventative maintenance visits in the first year, which is costly to administer, but which is key to customer satisfaction and the prolonged lifetime of the products and benefits of using solar.
